Zak Stern, known as Zak the Baker, has become someone or something of a local movement for those who have had the pleasure of trying his sourdough. Named after its owner, the kosher bakery cafe, with an open kitchen and a wash of light wood and concrete opened, in 2014 and was an immediate success.

On the menu is an offering of sandwiches, salads and larger platters based on what is freshly available served up alongside a variety of baked goods. All of it is simple and delicious – try the Sabiche, a mix-up of egg, mango chutney and pickled eggplant piled in between two pieces of perfectly crunchy rye.

Of course, the draw here is the bread; kosher sourdough made with natural leaven. Choosing is hard, Jewish rye, cranberry walnut and sunflower are favorites and supplies are limited to a first come, first serve basis. For $6 a loaf, it is worth trying a few, you'll be coming back for more.
